Stick or twist. That’s the choice artists face when they move from one release cycle to the next. Should their next piece of work continue the themes and sounds they developed before? Or should they gamble on experimentation and evolution?
For Edinburgh quartet folda, the decision never seems to have been in doubt. Their new single ‘you won’t‘ is one hell of a twist.
In our review of last year’s lust EP, we described their music which flirted around the edges of house as “sparse but elegant“. This track demonstrates a huge progression in composition and production. The song feels so much more expansive than anything folda have released to date,
Don’t get me wrong, the band haven’t abandoned the dark, brooding tones they have made their name on, but they have managed to balance them out with richer, more uplifting sections to brilliant effect.
For some bands, the decision to stick can yield exciting results, but I am so, so glad that folda chose to take a risk. The result is a single which sounds fresh and vibrant, and refuses to dull after multiple listens.
With more singles due out later in the year, the chances are we are going too see folda throwing us more curveballs. Personally, I can’t wait.
